Audience theory 2

Create a new blogpost called 'Audience theory 2 - blog tasks' and answer the following questions:

1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence?
A lot of the time the media can be at blame for violent behaviour as there are certain films and TV shows that are centred around violence and some younger people can be heavily influenced by this and this then can lead to the child committing a crime
2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples.
I think it is still a bit relevant but not as much as before as now in the 21st century we as audiences are able to recognise what is morally unacceptable and acceptable so we are able to control what we are influenced by and not do violent acts because we have witnessed it in maybe a film or TV show.

3) Research five examples of moral panic from the last 50 years. To what extent was the media responsible for these moral panics? Was the concern in society justified? How have things changed as a result of these moral panics?
Video games
Violence is learned, not a born characteristic. Many children are exposed to a lot of violence at a young age whether it is from media or in real life. Nowadays, Children don't usually play together quietly and peacefully, instead they are maybe using things like twigs and toys to hit each other or act as if they were from an action movie that they may have seen. But it could be argued that kids can play these violent video games to release any stress they have which is better than releasing it on a real person potentially hurting them.

Rap music
Almost all artists today's songs have lyrics about sex, violence, drugs etc which is influencing the way the younger generations act towards their peers. Today's generation learn a lot of their cursive language from this rap songs that they listen to or even when their parents may be arguing

Rock and Roll
Rock and roll music is associated with sex and drugs and alcohol pretty much all of the time. Many rock icons are make themselves to look like heavy drug users and alcohol addicts which will influence many younger children to think that it may be morally correct when it most definitely isn't.

Film
The media was at fault for this as too many violent films are made with things like gangs, guns and etc which many children will end up watching and think is fun to do because they don't know what is morally correct and what is morally incorrect.

4) Read this introduction to an academic paper on technopanics. What examples are given of technopanics that create fear in society?
Online child safety, digital privacy and cyber security

5) How does the author suggest that technopanics should be addressed - rather than through government regulation?
Adam Theirer suggests they should be addressed through education and empowerment of based solutions.

6) Do you think the internet should be regulated? Should the government try and control what we can access online?
I don't think this should be allowed as we should be allowed to access we want as we should be the only ones in control of our lives. I also see this as an invasion of privacy.

7) Apply Gerbner's cultivation theory to new and digital media. Is the internet creating a fearful population? Are we becoming desensitised to online threats, trolling and abuse?
I don't think we take threats on the media as how we used to and now we will just disregard it and label it as trolling and then forget about it, whereas in the past people would be more fearful and may even get authorities involved because they are that worried for their wellbeing. Also ever since memes have become more and more relevant I feel like people take things as a joke more often than not and will also then disregard whatever violence they may see
8) Is heavy internet use something we should be worried about in society? How would you define 'heavy internet use'?
Heavy internet use is when you engage in online activities, e.g. gaming, streaming and extensive use of social media. I don't think we should be worried as we are smart enough to understand there are other aspects of life and that we have to stay healthy therefore we don't spend huge amounts of hours on media and do other things in private that people may not know about.
