1) Analyse this RBK 50 Cent advert using the key media language you learned today: denotation, connotation, colour, pose, framing, composition, size, type of shot, subject matter, setting, lighting.
By looking at this poster the first thing you're drawn to is the pose and facial expression of 50 Cent. He has a determined/confident look on his face as if he is saying to the viewer he cannot be stopped and will continue to become a stronger version of himself. Also by looking at the background on the you can see on the right hand side many finger prints which may represent his tough past life in which he spent time in prison for a crime. It also may represent that his identity will never change no matter what occurs and he will continue to carry on living out his life the same way he did before no matter what the media thinks of him. Also the lighting behind him is very dark to the point where nothing can be seen but darkness which may represent his darkened past life but his face has light shining on it showing he was grown and moved on from his harsh past and is making a change but he is still the same person. The use of a head and shoulders shot allows us to properly examine 50 Cents face and understand what emotions he may be feeling and the message he is trying to convey from this poster advertisement. The subject matter on this poster is the clear message pictured on the right of the poster which reads 'Where I am from, there is no plan B. So, take advantage of today because tomorrow is not promised'. This quote is clearly 50 Cent telling us, the audience that whatever you're doing you must do to the best of your ability and not bring yourself down or lose confidence as you never known when the opportunities you're given may fade away like how when 50 went to prison many doors closed on him which could've been extremely beneficial but instead he chose to wrongly throw them away and go down the wrong path. The colour used here in this poster is black and white could represent his dark and tragic background that is now behind him. Also the fact that there is no background shown on the left side of the poster but on the right side there is could maybe represent how the left was his bad side from the past but the right is his redeemed self from now.
The first thing noticeable about this poster is the fact that it is a of Colin Kaepernick which allows us to get a closer look on his face and may help us understand his current feelings. The background is fully black and this colour connotes to strength, power and authority which relates to the print adverts' quote which reads that you must 'Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.' This quote from Nike has a very deep meaning as Colin has sacrificed his whole career to support in which he believes is correct which he has begun to receive many negative comments about. In this poster Colins' pose is very confident and you can see by his eyes he is feeling very confident which is very respectable as he is going through a lot of controversy at the moment. Also at the bottom you can clearly see the just do it slogan and Nike swoosh which shows how Nike are firm believers in equality as they are supporting Colin for protesting against police brutality which may bring a wider audience in for Nike which increases their sales massively. Also another thing to look at is the type of font that is used. As you can see it's a simple font that does not look that exciting or intended for younger audiences as its targeted for a more mature audience that understand the importance of the message. The colour of the writing is white and the colour white can represent a successful beginnings therefore it could mean this new ad campaign that Colin has involved himself in will make a new bright path for him that may improve his lifestyle.
