Q2:
I think that in today's society icons and indexes are extremely important in media texts. First of all,Icons that are shown straight away tell the viewers what is being shown and what it may mean as it is literally the thing that the producer intends to show on purpose. Icons also allow us to understand media texts much more efficiently as we won't have to get as analytical as we are given the subject and nothing is hidden. Indexes are also important in media texts as they increase our analytical skills making us more aware of what certain aspects are and how they may relate to specific things.

Q3:
Almost all global brands try to avoid symbols when advertising and marketing because they don't want people to get the wrong interpretation of certain things and then lead to giving a negative view on what their product is which would result in loss of sales or the company being under fire by hundreds of people just for something that wasn't intentional which can be really detrimental to someones plans. When marketing you want to show off your product as it is,that way people will be more keen about it and want to invest their time/money into it.

Q4:
bad ads starbucks
The reason that this media product failed was because of the clear representation accident or not of the catastrophic event that was 9/11. Many people recognised the two cups next to each other to symbolise the twin towers and the zooming dragonfly is said by many people to be representing the plane that crashed into the buildings to cause the chaotic event. The final reason people believe this is a joke at 9/11 is the fact that the grass is shaped and cut like the buildings surrounding the twin towers and how it also mentions Collapse into cool and the word collapse could definitely relate to how the towers collapsed which many people straight away interpreted it as, making it another mistake from Starbucks that they couldn't properly argue against.

Image result for mcdonalds print advert

This is an extremely successful advert as the Icon which shows a McDonalds breakfast meal that looks extremely appetising and gives off the impression that McDonalds only serves the best food which when looking at this poster is definitely hard to argue against. The Index for this is clearly the large letter M which almost all people will straight away recognise as the trademark McDonalds logo and will be intrigued if they are a fan of the worldwide food chain. In-fact McDonalds are so confident that they are so worldwide they don't find it necessary to even put the full title 'McDonalds' on the poster and only use the letter M as they know how large of a company they are and almost every country in the world has a McDonalds food branch that people will regularly go to eat. We also see under the M it says 'Delicious starts right here'. This is McDonalds way of subtly putting it out there that they are the best at what they do and are the originators of such greatness which further shows their confidence which they should rightfully have because of what they have grown to be.
