MIGRAIN October assessment learner response
Total=20
1)
WWW- Your answer to Q2 shows great potential: genuine insight into the two products with thoughtful, creative meanings deconstructed. If we can get the rest of your answers to that standard then you wont be far away.
EBI- You didn't take the assessment when it first ran so imagine this impacted on your revision. Clearly you need to revise narrative, genre and reception theories as these are seriously lacking. Theory and terminology is crucial at A level.
- For Q4 you haven't got nearly enough written. Perhaps a timing issue? For 20 marks, you basically need a short essay.
2)
Q1: Frequent appropriate use of subject specific terminology throughout was not used
Q2: Consistent highly appropriate use of subject specific terminology throughout wasn't used
Q3: Frequent appropriate use of subject specific terminology throughout wasn't used
Q4: Excellent and accurate understanding of the theoretical framework that is demonstrated by consistently appropriate and detailed consideration of reception theory.
3)
Q1: They talked about Barthes action and enigma codes and how they both relate to the movie poster, which is one of the things I failed to do.
Q2: He/She commented on the different ethnicity of the males in the two different posters and thoroughly explains why this was done and the effect it brings.
Q3: They commented on genre theory and also the economic aspect in their paragraph and why they are so important which is another thing I missed out on.
Q4: He/She talked about reception theory and deeply explained the dominant readings, negotiated readings and the oppositional readings going into a lot of detail as if it were an essay
5) My strongest question was definitely question 2, most probably because we had studied them before in lesson so I wasn't going in blindly and remembered some of the things we had commented on and specific details which I could use for future writing like done here. Also, to identify the similarities and differences between the posters is not a very hard task to do.
6)My weakest question is probably question 4, this is because of multiple reasons. For the other questions I took way too long to complete them and therefore when it came to the last one I had no time to finish it properly and it ended up being cut really short when it should've been the longest to do.
7) I believe that the vibe magazine cover offers a wide variety of readings and interpretations to be done.
The central image shows the musical artist Miguel posing with jewellery and fashionable clothing, by applying recpetion theory to this I can ackknowledge that the hegemonic reading is the producers intended to make Miguel look this way to show his massive success and how he is living a lavish lifestyle after making so many successful hits. The jewels he is wearing shows his fame and success which conveys highly positive messages to the audience,, Another preferred reading is that the producers want the audience to be interested in hip hop and up to date with all the latest news to do with it and that the rich lavish lifestyle which is shown on the right with, 'your guide to the best' showing that the producers wants us to follow in these celebrities footsteps and follow what's trendy.
In addition, this clear is clearly primarily focused on the music industry as shown by the cover line, 'Kendrick Lamar, the new God MC'. This further shows how vibe magazine is associated with this culture which engages the youth demographic.
A counter-hegemonic reading for this is that even though Miguel is known for his great music this article also covers things like drugs and sex with people may think that the producers are glamorising. The way that the cover-line 'sex and drugs' is used is said like it is something positive that we shouldn't have any problem with and should be socially acceptable. Another counter hegemonic reading may be that this magazine is sexist as this front page is clearly full of only male musical artists when there are female rappers that are really popular. Another counter reading is that this magazine is a way to gloat in our faces because we're not living the same lifestyle these rich celebrities are and that they are much more superior than us even to the point where they are calling Kendrick Lamar a 'God'.
8) WWW: You analysed the magazine cover very well and went in depth when explaining all the different readings
EBI: You need to use more media terminology in your answer
