January assessment learner response
1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).
WWW-You make some good points in places and offer appropriate terminology and theory in Q1 and Q3. Now you need to add depth and sophistication to access the higher levels.
EBI-Exam technique is a factor: look at the number of marks! You've written more from Q1 (6 marks) than Q3 (20 marks). It's vital that you manage exam timing to spend longer on the high-mark questions.
-Revise cross-media regulation + PSB
-Q3 needs to explore both sides of the argument and be more sophisticated... is the media really to blame for school shootings
2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
On question 1 I missed out on mentioning Synergy and talking about how synergy allows companies to maximise profit from brand by branching out into other platforms, merchandise or products which could've got me another mark.
On question 2 when arguing for I should've mentioned how public service broadcasting maintains quality standards and audiences appreciate the quality and consistency of BBC, ITV and Channel 4. Doing so would've got me higher marks.
On question 3 I should've brought up moral panic as we learnt about it well enough in lesson and it would link to the idea of how the internet is dangerous and unregulated and how media can have a damaging effect on audiences.
3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment?
6.5
4) Look at your answer for Question 1. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.
I wrote about 3 different strategies and benefits but my explanation wasn't deep enough which made me lose out on easy marks.
5) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?
For question 2 I should've talked about both the BBC and the commercial broadcasters.Points like how there's a unique funding model for BBC and Channel 4 or Channel 4's reinvestment.
6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.
Bandura's social learning theory suggests people imitate the behaviour they see on screen. However, this experiment was done with children therefore it has been discredited by studies. This raises questions about regulation and whether younger people should be provided with protection from certain media content. In the digital age it also raises question if such regulation is possible as content can be downloaded so easily and parents can't always be aware what exactly their child is consuming.
