BFI Study Day: follow-up work

We covered a lot of ground from gender to semiotics and postmodern theory. Complete the following tasks on your Media 1 Exam blog to follow up our work from the study day: 1) Type up your notes from the day. -Intersectuality samaritans by idles  -Hooks says gender roles are socially constructed, not natural -Patriarchy+ male dominated society - patriarchy indoctrinates people from an early age -"Gender becomes a set of connotations that have become naturalised" -Hooks believes that traditionally masculine attitudes and behaviours are constructed by a patriarchal society -Men were shown to be aggresive as we see them fighting each other, doing physical activities.  -Treatment of women hasn't changed as women are still being objectified -Liberal feminist- focus on an individual and personal autonomy -Prescriptions of sex-appropriate behaviours  -Appearance (airbrushing female models) -Interests/skills (e.g. girls aren't adept with tech) -Self-perception (ho...

Evaluation

Image
1) Save your finished Photoshop magazine cover as a JPEG image and upload it to your evaluation blogpost. 2) Write an evaluation of your work: have you succeeded in your brief to create a new, original edition of an existing magazine? I believe that I partly succeeded in making a new, original edition of an existing magazine as it takes some key conventions but I use them effectively for my own magazine cover. I think my magazine gives off a serious tone for the audience, considering this is a GQ style magazine I had to make it appeal to a certain audience which would be tricky because of my lack of knowledge when it comes to this magazine, but I am hoping to deepen what I know of this magazine and this task was a great way to see where my understanding is at. I was hoping to get more cover lines in talking about a wider range of things but I couldn't come up with one that would fit what I am trying to do so next time I'll have to properly understand ...

Magazine practical task planning

Planning 1) Plan your main flash - this is the main cover story that links to your central image. My main flash will be a medium shot of Aran in which he will be wearing a hoodie and have a serious facial expression. My main story relating to this is that he is the newest upcoming fashion king setting trends for Spring. 2) Plan the image you will need for the cover - model, costume, make-up, lighting etc. At this point, simply describe the image you need to capture. The model I will be using for my cover will be Aran and he will be wearing primarily black clothing which will most probably be a hoodie. I won't be needing any make up as this is just a GQ style magazine. The lighting will be mainly focused on his upper body. 3) Write the cover lines and any additional text you need for your magazine cover. Advertising assessment LR

1) Type up your feedback in  full  (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential). WWW- You make some very good points in places...there is clear potential here to reach much higher grades EBI- Exam technique You must answer the question and remain focused on it -Lack of media theory -Lack of wider contexts see mark scheme for Q3 to see examples of this 2) Read the whole  mark scheme for this assessment  carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment. Q1-Brand logo- seif font, links to monochrome colour scheme, style, sophistication, tradition. Understated, placed in bottom left. Product not specified-about brand 'feel', aspiration rather than actual product details. Q2- Representation of women in the score advert reflects the changing role of women in the 1960s to some extent. This is no longer the stereotypical 1950s housewife but still a reductive, exp...

Gender, identity and advertising: blog task

1) What examples does Gauntlett provide of the "decline of tradition"? How can we link our advertising CSPs (Score hair cream and Maybelline 'That Boss Life') to this idea? Today, identity is seen as more fluid and transformable than ever before. The traditional view of a woman as a housewife or low-status worker has been kick-boxed out of the picture by the feisty, successful girl power icons' The masculine ideals of absolute tougness, stubborn self reliance and emotional silence have been shaken by a new emphasis on men's emotions, need for advice and the problems of masculinity. 2) How does Gauntlett suggest the media influences the way we construct our own identities? Modern societies don't leave people in any doubt that they need to make choices of identity and lifestyle-even if their preferred options are rather obvious and conventional ones. Also, in late modern socities everyone wants to 'live their own life', but this is, at the s...
