Y13 baseline assessment learner response
1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential)
Total-23 marks = C
WWW- Q1+2 are bascially perfect so the challenge here is timing and exam technique. You can improve this through revision, practise = planning.
EBI - Question focus: Q2 'How useful'
-Q3 just not enough for 25 marks but what is there is decent
2) Focusing on the BBC Life Hacks question, write three ways it helps to fulfil the BBC's mission statement that you didn't include in your original assessment answer. Use the mark scheme for ideas.
3) Question two asked you how useful media effects theories are in understanding the audience response to War of the Worlds. Complete the following:
4) Write a full essay plan for the 25-mark Magazines question. The mark scheme contains plenty of ideas you can use here. Your plan should include notes/bullet points addressing the following:
Introduction: one sentence answering the original question and laying out your argument clearly.
Paragraph 1 content:
Introduce both of the CSPS, link to question and explore the different ideas within them, talk about how the two brands have been maintaining their audience
Paragraph 2 content:
-Make use of different theories
-Uses and Gratifications
-Personal identity
-Hyper-masculinity
-Time periods- whats in store for now and the future
-Mental Health
'Marathon man'
Paragraph 3 content:
-Decline in print
-Rise in digital media
-Circulation figures
-Design of the magazine itself
-Cover lines
-Central image
Paragraph 4 content:
Bring up Oh Comely
-Refer back to question
-Apply different theories
-Uses and Gratifications
-Personal identity
-Surveillance
-Psycho-graphics
-Gender fluidity
Paragraph 5 content:
-What Oh Comely reflects
-Independency
-Niche audiences
-ABC figures
-Readers per issue
-Circulation
Conclusion: sum up your argument a final time in one sentence
Oh comely is able to build up a loyal audience of the upper class even though digital media is constantly evolving due to the fact that they're a niche magazine. They have been able to sustain this audience for years and intend to carry it on for many more years to come. Men's Health are also able to maintain a loyal fan base as they have been building it up for ages, which is why they are now the biggest Men's magazine in the world.
5) Finally, identify three key skills/topics you want to work on in A Level Media this year before the final exams in June.
-I need to revise more in general
-Work on my 25 marker skill as right now it's where I am dropping the most marks
-Timing is an issue
-Work on knowing the CSP's better.

2) Focusing on the BBC Life Hacks question, write three ways it helps to fulfil the BBC's mission statement that you didn't include in your original assessment answer. Use the mark scheme for ideas.
- The use of a qualified doctor, Dr Radha Modgil, gives the advice authority and is in keeping with the BBC’s place as a trusted public service broadcaster.
- Life Hacks offers educational content by addressing issues listeners may not know much about such as sexual health
- Life Hacks informs Radio 1 listeners about topics and issues they may be experiencing in their own lives such as managing debt, dealing with gender identity issues
3) Question two asked you how useful media effects theories are in understanding the audience response to War of the Worlds. Complete the following:
- Gerbner's Cultivation theory: useful or not useful? Why?
- Frankfurt School's Hypodermic Needle model: useful or not useful? Why?
- Stuart Hall's Reception theory: useful or not useful? Why?
Stuart Hall’s reception theory is arguably more useful than traditional effects theories in
analysing audience reaction – some would have believed it (preferred reading?), other
sections of the audiences would have challenged or rejected it entirely. Even then, was
Welles’s intention to genuinely panic listeners (i.e. the preferred reading)? This is
questionable.
