OSP: Teen Vogue & The Voice month in focus
The story talks about how traditional sources are primarily written by and aimed towards an older demographic, therefore they don't connect to the younger generations as they should be. It is also stated how young people are more likely to consume news through social media sites than they are traditional news organisations. Additionally it is said that teens who use social media are more likely to be civically engaged and that young people are using their own social platforms to share news with people. I believe this story appeals to a young audiences extremely well due to it being explicitly about THEM. It gives them an insight onto how they can use their platform for worldly matters as well as an efficient way on consuming beneficial news.
The Voice - Young People use film to stand up to knife crime
The story focuses on a group of young people who attend Haringey Sixth Form College who have created and starred in their own three film series which shows the devastating impact youth violence can have. Going into detail the films tells the stories of young people involved in violence and the impact it has on their families. This story is very crucial for young audiences as it is an eye opener for the youth, showing the massive impact knife crime is having on our society and how we must put a stop to it. This is a form of quality journalism as The Voice are spreading awareness on a serious issue which is heavily impacting the life of young people.
The story explains how the spinoff series 'Love, Victor' will no longer be aired on Disney+ due it containing themes that were more adult than Disney+ is comfortable with having on their streaming platform as it is aimed towards more younger audiences who shouldn't be shown alcohol use, marital issues, and sexual exploration. I believe that this is a form of clickbait, this is because Teen Vogue are potentially trying to make it seem like Disney may be against LGBTQ+ due to it being removed in pride month but once you look deeper into the story it is evident that this isn't the case at all.
This story focuses on a student, Ruby Williams who won an £8,500 payout after being sent home from school because of her afro, she states that schools must improve upon their uniform policies. She was told that her hair was in breach of the school's policy and sent home multiple times between year 10 and 11 when studying for her GCSE's. Certain readers may have been involved in a similar situation and feel like them can come to people for help on how to handle these incidents. This isn't click bait as the story is touching on a serious matter and doesn't divert itself to something different.
Teen Vogue - As coronavirus spreads, so does anti-chinese racism
This story explains how anti-Chinese racism has absolutely sky-rocketed since the outburst of corona virus as many people especially on social media are pointing fingers at the entire Chinese community as if they all have the corona virus and are a major threat to society. The story also goes on to talking about how from even way back in the the late 19th century Chinese Americans have been described as disease ridden and dirty. This isn't clickbait as it is addressing a serious matter in the world as of right now and showing the impact it's having on a specific culture. Some audiences such as Chinese Americans will feel like they relate to this a lot, seeing their own life being reflected in it as they too may be getting discriminated against/judged.
This story from 'The Voice' focuses on UK superstar Stormzy and his influence on the UK elections. Voting registration was shown to have drastically risen after Stormzy utilised his huge social media presence to get people to vote, also pledging his support to Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour party. By doing so the number of people registering to vote increased by 40,000 which just shows how much of an impact he had made. This isn't clickbait as it supplies us with statistics and even quotes from Stormzy himself and doesn't go off course into another article that has nothing to do with the subject.
